This was the main area visitors experienced when coming to the farm to buy cattle. A gravel lot once sat out front, leading into the “lot” where cattle were gathered before being run through the chute beside the office. From there, they would be weighed, sold, and loaded out — making this one of the busiest and most important parts of the operation.

Stories from this area still get passed down. One that’s often remembered is about a large bull named Elroy. Getting him through the chute and onto a buyer’s trailer took some effort — a reminder of the kind of work and moments that played out here regularly.

In the 1980s, a fire destroyed the nearby dairy barn and damaged parts of this area, including the original office and chute. The office building that stands today was rebuilt afterward, carrying forward the location and purpose of the original structure.

As part of the ongoing restoration of the farm, this area is next in line. Plans include rebuilding the lot with a classic white farm fence and reimagining the office for future use. The goal is to bring back the character of this space while giving it a new role on the farm.
