Red Star Farm is home to three ponds — the Front Pond, Fishing Pond, and Forest Pond. Each was built or evolved during different periods of the farm’s history, but all served a similar purpose: providing reliable water sources for cattle across the property. Over time, they’ve become much more than that.

The Fishing Pond is the largest and most established of the three, dating back to the early days of Red Star Farm. It served as the primary water source for cattle and once fed water through a pipe running downhill to troughs in the surrounding fields. Today, it remains a central feature of the farm — now home to wildlife, including a pair of blue herons often seen along the water’s edge.

The Front Pond was rebuilt in the 1980s when our family took ownership of the property, though the area had naturally held water long before that. Fed by runoff from the hay fields and a nearby natural spring beneath the windmill to the south, it has served both as a water source and a place for fishing. Its location near the front of the property makes it one of the most visible and accessible parts of the farm.

The Forest Pond sits deeper within the property, surrounded by trees and accessible by a network of trails. It follows the natural flow of water from the Fishing Pond and nearby fields, creating a more secluded and quiet setting. While the dam has deteriorated over time and the pond now holds a portion of its original size, it remains one of the most unique and peaceful areas on the farm.
